Almería has the largest concentration of greenhouses in the world, spread over 35,000 hectares. The "California of Europe" employs about 80.000 workers, and 40.000 of them are illegal. Hundreds of tons of vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers are produced here annually, fuelling the province of Almeria's economy by $1.5 billion in annual revenue. More than half of Europe’s fresh fruits and vegetables are grown under these plastic shades.
